Chocolate Stout Cake.

This recipe is just a basic chocolate cake recipe except adding beer. By adding it to the mix you get a lovely moist stout taste and by adding it to the icing you get a deep toasted malt taste that compliments the chocolate perfectly.

You will need.

  •  175g self raising flour
  • 1 pinch of baking powder
  • 1 pinch of bi carb
  • 275g dark brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 50g cocoa powder
  • 200ml of stout



For the icing

  • 110g dark chocolate
  • 3tbsp stout
  • 50g softened butter
  • 110g icing sugar.

You will also need 2 loose bottomed baking tins. I used 20cm but you can use what ever you like.

For the method, Like I said its really easy

  • 1) Mix all your ingredients in a bowl except for the stout, Mix until well combined.
  • 2) gradually add the stout little by little until the mixture is lump free and totally smooth
  • 3) Grease your tins and line with greaseproof paper.
  • 4) divide your mixture evenly between the two tins making sure to tip and feed the mixture around the tins.
  • bake for 30-40 minutes (depending on the thickness of your tins) or until golden brown. Another way to test is to gently push the centre with your finger, if it springs back its done and if not it may need a little longer.
  • separate the sides from the tins and leave the bases to cool.

Now while your cakes are cooling its a good time to get on with your icing.

  • melt the chocolate over a saucepan and combine the stout until melted together in a smooth substance.
  • beat in the softened butter and icing sugar until its smooth and spreadable like a soft butter.

Once the cakes have cooled put a dollop of icing in the middle, spread around and sandwich together. pour your remaining icing on top and smooth all over the cake. for decoration shave some chocolate using a a flat knife and dragging it across the chocolate until you get decorative shavings.

Serving suggestions.

Well the ultimate pairing for this would be the same stout you made it with. Enjoy a glass of the stout with a slice of cake on a cold winter afternoon. Alternatively a little drizzle of nice double cream would also go wonders!
