I’m Jak Whitehouse, happily living in the Midlands. I work in logistics during the week and spend my weekends relaxing with a cold beer.
Since I can remember beer has been a part of my life. I remember being fascinated by the homebrew setup my grandad had in his shed. The family would come together every Sunday to enjoy his homebrew. It was a big social occasion for my family!
I grew up watching my older siblings turn the legal age to drink. I started noticing the different varieties of alcohol. Being small enough to squeeze behind the sofa meant I could sneakily sample all off the different drinks, including my dad’s cider, when he would sit watching the television.
Then came my time, my 18th. From this point, my interest in beer grew massively. Armed with my trusty ID, I could get in anywhere and try anything I wanted. Stella and Guinness were my drinks.
It was 2009 when my parents bought me my first homebrew starter kit for Christmas. My aim, as ashamed as I am to admit it, was to make a Stella tasting lager. The result? Better than I could ever have dreamed it would turn out! Nothing like Stella but it had depth and body. It was at this point a homebrew shop opened in a neighbouring town. Whilst buying supplies, I spoke with the owner. He opened my eyes to small breweries, hops, different yeasts and processes. This was the start of my journey into the world of beer.
Fast forward a few years, I found BrewDog, Beavertown Brewery and The Kernel Brewery. I love them all. I’ve put countless hours into my passion, sampling the wide variety of styles, learning what has been done differently. I’ve enjoyed the different recipes, including the small batch independent collaborations.
